The 2017 edition of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) registered a record participation of 108,000 visitors from 203 countries worldwide, 7% more than last year’s edition, according to figures released this Thursday by the event organisers GSMA. Those who passed through the MWC’s main venues at L’Hospitalet Gran Via and Fira de Montjuic were mostly senior executives, including 6,100 CEOs. The economic impact in Barcelona and its metropolitan area is estimated to reach €465 million and over 13,200 temporary jobs have been created due to the MWC. 2,300 international companies, which went beyond just the mobile phone industry, including firms from the automotive, financial and health sectors, presented their novelties at the world’s most important cell-phone and internet-related exhibition. 

From digital health, to the Internet of Things (IoT), Artifical Intelligence (AI), virtual reality, AgTech and EdTech. These are the fields of the 15 Barcelona start-ups representing Catalonia at the Disrupt SF 2016 entrepreneurial event, taking place this week in San Francisco. The 15 Catalan firms have been selected from a total of 128 applicants. Catalonia Trade & Investment, Catalonia’s agency for economic promotion, together with the technology media Tech Crunch, were responsible for the decision and have organised the trade mission to California. The 15 companies will also be able to pitch their projects in front of 50 investors and US companies at a meeting on the 15^th of September at Samsung’s Silicon Valley facilities. 

Mobile World Congress 2016 expects 95,000 visitors, 2,000 more than in 2015. 2,100 exhibitors, 160 government delegates and 4,000 journalists from all over the world will also attend the fair, which is considered the most important in the mobile sector. Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg will feature, for the third year in a row, as one of the congress’ most high-profile speakers and F1 driver Lewis Hamilton will take part in a round table to discuss the implementation of wireless technology in the automotive sector. Giants from the sector, such as Google, Samsung, Sony and LG, will be present at the fair, while Apple will once again be the most notable absentee. The Mobile World Congress will generate a 460 million euros impact on Barcelona and its surroundings and will create 13,000 jobs. Security measures for this year’s edition will be increased due to the terrorist attacks which occurred in Paris in November.
