Ascó Nuclear Power Plant’s information centre receives international award for architecture

The information centre at Ascó Nuclear Power Plant in Catalonia has won one of the prestigious International Architecture Awards, organised by the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Arquitecture and Design. Ascó’s building, located in Southern Catalonia and designed by the Catalan architects Olga Felip and Josep Camps, was one of 81 projects from 21 countries to receive the prize. The jury highlighted the incorporation of the centre with the nuclear power plant, and its harmony with the surrounding landscape. The materials selected by the architects are designed to emulate day and night.

Barcelona City Council maintains cleaning the seafront water

The team responsible for keeping Barcelona’s beaches clean uses a unique combination of boats and sand vehicles, operating daily during the summer season. This summer, the sea in front of Barcelona is particularly clean, aided by favourable coastal currents and the lack of rain which has helped reduce waste on the coast. The Deputy Mayor of Urban Development, Antoni Vives, has highlighted that “this is a particularly good year for swimming in Barcelona since the water quality is high”.

100,000 year old elephant remains found near Barcelona

It is the first time that the complete remains of an elephant have been found in the Catalan mountain range, Massís del Garraf, located in Greater Barcelona. Archaeologists from the University of Barcelona found the remains which have been dated as up to 100,000 years old. The remains were found in the ‘Cova del Rinoceront’ (Rhinoceros’ cave), in Castelldefels, a unique Palaeolithic site in Catalonia. The remains show that there were elephants in the central Catalan coastal area before the mammoths’ own arrival during the Ice Age.

Catalonia leads Spanish fashion exports in 2011

A new report by “The Brandery” shows that in 2011, Catalonia was a crucial factor in the success of Spain’s growing fashion industry and emphasises its continuing and growing importance on the international fashion stage. Empordà Designation of Origin sells more than four million bottles of wine in a year for the first time

34% of the bottles have been sold in the Girona region, but Barcelona is still “the pending market”. Sales have been 5% higher in comparison to 2010 and 18% higher compared to the last four years. The president of the wine designation, Josep Blanch, said that this “achievement” proves that Empordà DO has consolidated because since its beginnings, it has been growing year by year in a “consistent” way.

Swimming with red tuna, a new eco-tourism attraction in Catalonia’s Costa Daurada

The Balfegó Group has started to offer a ‘Tuna-Tour’ that allows tourists to visit in catamaran the farms where tuna are fed and being taken care of. The Balfegó Group aims to show off its sustainable fishing techniques for preserving this endangered species. The tour lasts two hours and fifteen minutes and allows tourists to swim with the endangered fish if they want to.

Taxis will have a flat rate for trips from Barcelona El Prat Airport by 2013

Barcelona’s Metropolitan Taxi Institute (IMET) will apply a flat rate from next year, which could be set at €15 for trips from or to El Prat Airport. The measure would only apply to taxis belonging to Barcelona and its metropolitan area. Beyond searching for “short term” measures to adapt the taxi sector to a drop of about 40% in demand because of the crisis, the IMET, along with the taxi organisations, are working to get back into the market.

A project from Girona wins international award for designing a sustainable home in Alaska

An architectural project drawn up by teachers, ex-teachers and students at the University of Girona (UdG) got the third prize in the ‘Living Aleutian Design Competition’, one of the most prestigious sustainability competitions of the world. The test consisted in making a house of 150 square meters which was 100% sustainable in Alaska, a place that must stand extreme weather.

Catalonia will sell tourist packages to promote thermal centres among young people across Europe

Thermal tourism continues to increase, but the sector still has to get rid of the stigma that associates it with the elderly. As a result of this image and the current economic context, people from the sector want to reinvent their business in order to reach publics of all ages. 16th European Balloon Festival has a new image and a strong presence on social networks
