Catalan exports have fallen by 7.1% compared to the same period last year, equating to 6,6billion euros. With the rest of the year in mind this equates to an accumulated drop of 13.3% since January, as announced by the Spanish government.

Given that the pandemic has dealt every sector of the economy with a large blow, Catalonia exported products worth 53,923 billions of euros this year, specified the industry, commerce and tourism ministry.

However, this yearly drop has become more moderate as each month has passed. In September it was at 14.1%, whilst in August it reached 15.2%.

The region remains well-placed in comparison to the rest of the state, contributing to 25.9% of all Spain-wide exports.

Nonetheless, imports have also reduced by 11.2% in October to 1,257 billion euros, totalling at a 20.7% decrease this year with just above 62 billion euros.

In 2019, Catalonia had been on a nine-year upwards trendin terms of exports, nearing an all-time best at the end of the past year; a pattern which has been stopped in its tracks by the Covid-19 pandemic.
