Public transport fares in Barcelona will see a 6.75% increase in 2024, the Barcelona Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (ATM) has decided. Young travelers under the age of 30 who use the T-Jove card will continue to receive a 20% discount, as will frequent travelers who use the T-casual travel card.

If the Spanish government continues to reduce the cost of public transport by 30%, this would mean that travelers who use the T-Jove and T-Casual cards would see a 50% discount.

The contribution from the Spanish Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, however, has not yet been decided. This means that the exact prices and the day they come into effect have not yet been determined.

The increase is the first since 2020, and higher energy costs over the past year is the main reason, according to ATM. The Covid-19 pandemic also had a “two-year negative impact” on the public company’s bottom line.

Validity and ticket exchange

Most ickets purchased in 2023 will be valid until February 29, 2024. T-Verda and T-16 cards have individual expiry dates.

Tickets purchased in 2022 and extended into 2023 will expire on December 31, 2023.

Unused tickets may be exchanged for tickets of the same type until March 31, 2024, and travelers must pay the price difference.
