Penalties for drivers of highly polluting vehicles in Barcelona's Low Emissions Zone (LEZ) will be issued starting on September 15.

Although the restrictions in the Catalan capital and its surroundings came into effect on January 1, it was initially intended to be followed by a three-month grace period until April 1 to allow drivers to adapt to the new measure.

This, however, was interrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic, with the grace period first expected to last for another month after the end of the state of alarm before being announced on Wednesday that it would end just under three months later.

The measure, which it is estimated will affect some 50,000 vehicles, will issue fines to drivers whose vehicles are not allowed to enter the LEZ at certain times of the day.
