Housing sales in Catalonia increased by more than 40% on 2013 figures in March

Sales of residential real state in Catalonia increased by 42.8% in March compared to the same month in 2013, according to data released on Tuesday by the Spanish Statistics Institute (INE). In the whole of Spain, housing sales grew by 22.8% in the same period, with 27,047 transactions. In Catalonia, 3,944 residential units were sold: 1,267 were newly-built houses (32.12%) while the remaining 2,677 were second-hand (67.88%). 3,567 (90.44%) were open market while the remaining 377 (9.56%) were subsidised housing units. Catalonia is the Autonomous Community with the second highest percentage increase in sales, coming after the Balearic Islands, which registered 71% increase.

According to the figures released on Tuesday by the Spanish Statistics Institute and previous news published in the last few months, Spain’s real state market is starting to recover, or at least it has stopped decreasing and is growing again. Within this trend fro the whole of Spain, Catalonia is one of the main drivers, since the Catalan real estate market is attracting foreign investment and is growing at a significantly higher pace than the Spanish average. According to the latest data available in March 2014, Catalan housing sales increased by 42.8% compared to those completed in the same month of 2013. In the whole of Spain, they increased by 22.8%.

In Catalonia, 3,944 housing units were bought. In addition, 206 were transferred after a donation, 30 through an exchange mechanism, 2,369 in an inheritance process and 3,286 through other means. In total, 9,835 housing units were transferred in Catalonia. In the whole of Spain, 27,047 were bought, 1,236 were donated, 166 were exchanged, 11,847 were inherited and 19,021 were transferred through other means. In total, 59,317 housing units were transferred in Spain in March 2014.

Besides, 19,941 entire buildings and estates were transferred in Catalonia in March. 2,321 are country houses or rural estates. Among the urban properties 9,835 are residential buildings, 1,065 are plots of land and 6,720 are other types of urban properties. In the whole of Spain, 139,371 buildings and estates were transferred. 33,449 are country house or rural estates. Among the urban properties, 59,317 are residential buildings, 5,832 are plots of land, and 40,773 are other types of urban properties.
