The Mobile World Congress 2021 hosted the presentation of the first hologram device using 5G technology, the Portl. The hologram system is akin to an ultra-high-definition video in which you can interact with people from any part of the world.

The Portl device was presented by the Mobile World Capital Barcelona in collaboration with Newtonlab Space, and Roger Belso, creative director of the latter, says that the device could “transport people from one part of the world to another” given the extremely high-quality picture and immediacy of communication it offers.

The device has the capacity to revolutionize entertainment and communication and can help greatly in the fields of health, education and tourism. The Portl can be used “to connect remotely with a teacher, for example, you can have a teacher in North America and have the hologram in Europe,” as explained by the director of the MWCapital, Eduard Martin.

Martin added that the tool can help in the world of medicine also, with specialist doctors giving support to hospitals anywhere in the world. Additionally, holograms can be used for surgeries. The same hologram model was used in a Barcelona hospital in February 2020 to carry out a highly-complex operation.

As well as these useful purposes, the Portl can bring people closer together in times of pandemic. For instance, it can allow people to visit events such as the Mobile World Congress without the need to leave their home country.
