Between Friday 30th May and Sunday 1st June, Lleida-Alguaire Airport will play host to the first ever European race in the Air Race F1 competition , a long-established American flying competition. The event, called the Lleida Air Challenge, will also include a race of the Spanish aerobatic flying championship and other aeronautical activities. Practice started on Wednesday but the actual races will start on Friday and end on Sunday with the Air Race F1 event. 8 aircraft fly at 10-15 metres above ground level at 400km/h. The CEO of Air Race F1, Jeff Zaltman, said that he wants the competition to grow in Europe and Catalonia to act as its base for operations.

The Igualada-Odena airfield, located in Central Catalonia is home since 1992 to an aeronautical fair called Aerosport. This fair is unique in Spain. While some towns organise more events related to airplanes, this is the only one dedicated to the leisure airplane market. This year Aerosport received more than 6,000 visitors, 200 aircrafts and 35 exhibitors over last weekend. Its objectives are to put customers and companies in contact, to help people discover leisure air activities and to put the Igualada-Odena airfield on the map. Besides the exhibitors stands, aerobatics shows and conferences were also held.

The new retail outlet mall will create 1,000 new jobs. The Spanish company has bought a plot of land of 25,000 square metres from the Catalan Government to build the macro shopping centre in Viladecans, near Barcelona El Prat Airport. The mall will have top brands at low prices and it is expected to attract not only locals but also many tourists. The land had been reserved since 2006 for the creation of a business hub for companies related to the aero-spatial and mobility sectors, but the project was finally aborted due to the economic crisis. Greater Barcelona already has a similar mall 30 km north of the Catalan capital, while the new macro outlet will be less than 15 km south.

Today Iberia unveiled its colossal reparation hangar, able to host the giant A-380 airplane. In addition, after 5 years of decreasing its flights from Barcelona, especially at an international level, Iberia announced that it will operate direct flights linking Sao Paulo and Miami with the Catalan capital.

The county of Baix Llobregat located just south of Barcelona is fighting the crisis with plans to expand its aerospace sector. A new park aims to become the new mobility and logistics pole in Catalonia.
