Barcelona's local court number 15 sent former Futbol Club Barcelona (FCB) player Dani Alves to prison without bail on suspicion of sexual assault.

The footballer entered Brians 1 preventive prison on Friday evening after the judge's decision, as the Catalan News Agency (ACN) first reported.

The allegations date back to December 30, 2022 in Sutton, a nightclub in the Catalan capital.

Alves, who gave testimony to Catalan Mossos d'Esquadra police in the morning, was then escorted to the Ciutat de la Justícia courthouses.

The prosecutor's office requested preventive detention without bail for the athlete, as announced in the early afternoon, something the judge acceded to.

On the night of the alleged sexual assault, the woman alerted the nightclub's security guards that Alves had touched her without her consent.

Police opened an investigation into the alleged incident following the accusation and the information received by the nightclub.

Catalan equality and feminism minister Tània Verge tweeted that "being rich and famous does no longer give impunity in sexual assaults," she wrote on Friday evening.
