Barcelona (FCB).– The Barça defender Éric Abidal will have a liver transplant. The surgery will take place in the next few weeks. FC Barcelona medical services have issued a medical communiqué this Thursday morning announcing the news concerning Abidal’s health. The French defender went through a previous surgery to remove a tumour from his liver, exactly a year ago. According to the FC Barcelona, the liver transplant had been considered an option from the start of Abidal’s treatment. Last season, Abidal recovered from March surgical intervention and was back in the squad in May, on time to play and win the Champions League final, held at Wembley. FC Barcelona captain, Carles Puyol, let Abidal the honour to lift the European Cup title. This season, Abidal has shown great performances in many games.


The FC Barcelona medical communiqué stated the following: “during the next few weeks, the player will undergo a liver transplant as a result of the progress of his liver disease. A transplant was considered an option from the start of his treatment a year ago. At the express wishes of the player, the Club asks that the maximum respect for the player’s privacy be observed.”
