Catalan president Quim Torra has announced the holding of an institutional event on July 9 to pay tribute to those who died during the Covid-19 pandemic in Catalonia.

Torra made the announcement in the western Catalan city of Lleida, where he took part in the 'Sighs of Peace' event in memory of the city's 349 residents who have lost their lives since March 14.

Torra dedicated "an immense hug" to all the families of Lleida who have lost a loved one during this health crisis and indicated that he will extend it "to the whole country" on July 9, when he will remember "all Catalans in a national act to keep them in mind."

The president, however, has not yet specified the place where the event will take place.

To date, over 12,000 have died from Covid-19 in Catalonia since the beginning of the health emergency, as reported by funeral homes across the country.
