People’s Party (PP) leader Pablo Casado has accused the Catalan president of seeking "bloodshed" and "civil war," in one of the most severe statements by the head of the opposition against pro-independence parties in the Spanish parliament.

In response, the Spanish president, Pedro Sánchez, accused Casado of "carrying out authoritarian opposition, both in its form and its content, insulting political rivals." The head of the Socialist party also accused his conservative counterpart of painting himself as the only one standing up in defense of the Constitution.
