The High Court has greenlighted the Catalan government’s request to extend Covid-19 restrictions until August 20 and to increase the number of municipalities facing an overnight curfew from 162 to 176.

When the measure comes into effect on Friday after midnight, the list of municipalities facing mobility restrictions from 1 to 6am will add the towns of Manresa and Figueres, among others.

In all, more than six million people in Catalonia live in a municipality facing curfew, accounting for 80% of the total population.

Up until now, the measure affected towns with a Covid-19 incidence rate of 400 or more cases per 100,000 inhabitants over the past seven days. Now, the threshold will be lowered from 400 to 250 cases.

Social gatherings will remain capped at 10 people, as has been the case since Catalan authorities reintroduced a string of Covid-19 restrictions last July, following a surge of infections caused by the highly contagious Delta variant.
