A man was arrested on Monday morning over the death of his pregnant partner, a 31-year-old woman, in Manresa, central Catalonia.

The police had originally ruled out the death being a murder due to a lack of evidence – yet, the forensic investigation resulted in the case being sent to the court dealing with violence against women in Manresa.

According to the Catalan high court, there are no criminal records of violence between the man arrested and the victim.

A judge will decide in the coming hours whether the man remains in provisional detention or is released.

The events took place on May 6 at Manresa's Gaudí street, in the home where the victim had moved shortly before the incident.

The city council has set three days of mourning, and politicians will hold a minute of silence at midday on Tuesday at the Plaça Major square. The Catalan equality and feminism minister, Tània Verge, as well as Manresa's mayor Marc Aloy, will be on the site. During the three days, flags will fly at half mast.
