Barcelona (ACN).- Barcelona will host the 24th edition of the International Congress on Onomastic Sciences to be held from the 5th to 9th September. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss, among other things, the importance of names in everyday life. The conference has been organised by the Catalan ministries of Culture and Planning and Sustainability and the University of Barcelona, under the auspices of the International Council of Onomastics Sciences (ICOS). This organisation promotes research within the field of names, including personal names and place names.

The conference is a forum for discussion and debate as well as a platform for various presentations. There will be an international, intercultural and interdisciplinary perspective relating to all theoretical and practical Onomastic issues. The conference wants to foster and promote cooperation among specialists from different linguistic areas of the world and between different fields of knowledge and research.

The International Council of Onomastics Sciences held its first Congress in 1938 in Paris. Since 1947 it has taken place every three years in a different city around the world and usually with the collaboration of prestigious universities.

There will be about 600 professionals and academics related to personal names from over 50 countries. Among the most important are the president of the Group of Experts on Geographical Names of the United Nations Helen Kerfoot, President of the International Council of Onomastics Sciences Sheila Embleton, and the Onomastics Director of the Institute of Catalan Studies Josep Moran, who is also the Executive Chairman of the XXIV International Congress on Onomastic Sciences.
