Spain appoints Catalan MP Enric Millo as new delegate of the Spanish executive in Catalonia to show “negotiating disposition”

The Spanish Government appointed this Friday former spokesman of the Catalan branch of the governing People’s Party, Enric Millo, as the new delegate of the Spanish executive in Catalonia. Millo will substitute Maria de los Llanos de Luna after a term of office which has been defined by tensions between the two governments. According to the Spanish Government’s Spokesman, Íñigo Méndez de Vigo, the replacement aims to show the “negotiating disposition” of the new Spanish executive. “People are important, but disposition and willingness are even more so”, stated Méndez de Vigo before the press. Millo started his career in the Parliament in 1995 representing Christian Democrat ‘Unió’. In 2003 he joined PPC and since 2010 he has been the party’s spokesman in the Catalan Chamber.

Barcelona (CNA).- Catalan MP Enric Millo has been named as the new delegate of the Spanish executive in Catalonia, replacing Maria de los Llanos de Luna. Thus, Spain’s executive aims to show the “negotiating disposition” of the new government in Madrid since “people are important, but disposition and willingness are even more so”, explained Spanish Government Spokesman, Íñigo Méndez de Vigo before the press. Millo is a long-serving MP in the Catalan Chamber. He started his career in the Parliament in 1995 representing Christian Democrat ‘Unió’. In 2003 he joined PPC and since 2010 has been the party’s spokesman in the Catalan Chamber. PPC’s leader, Xavier García Albiol, praised María de los Llanos de Luna’s work and hoped for Millo “to follow in the same vein” as her. Llanos de Luna has often represented the tension between the Spanish and Catalan Governments, which has defined the last term of office.

“These are new times for all of us because Spaniards have this of all of us”, stated Méndez de Vigo. “Now the Spanish Parliament is more plural and the Government which has been invested has been required to dialogue and this is what it is doing”, he added. “People are important, but disposition and willingness are even more so, and all the pieces that the Government is moving seem to match”.

Millo, a long career as an MP

Enric Millo became an MP in 1995, representing Christian Demorat ‘Unió’, the party which, together with liberal ‘Convergència’, formed the coalition ‘CiU’ which was the governing force in Catalonia for more than 20 years.

In 2003, Millo joined the Catalan People’s Party (PPC) and in 2006 he was appointed leader of the party for the Girona region. In 2010 he was named PPC’s spokesman, a responsibility which he has kept to date.

PPC leader hopes for Millo to follow in his predecessor’s way

At a press conference this Friday, PPC’s leader, Xavier García Albiol, thanked the former delegate of the Spanish Government in Catalonia, María de los Llanos de Luna for her work. “She made feel proud those who feel both Catalan and Spanish”, he said. “Everyone has their own style and their own way”, he continued “but the dialogue from the part of the Spanish Delegation has always existed”. In this vein, García Albiol hoped for Millo “to follow in the same vein” as De Luna.
