Esquerra Republicana’s spokesperson, Marta Vilalta, called for unity within the pro-independence movement ahead of the Supreme Court’s verdict on the jailed leaders for their role in 2017 secession bid, which is expected to be announced between September and October.

Talking to the press on Monday, Vilalta has asked that work towards "generating a consensus" among parties be intensified, and explained that talks were being held to come up with a joint strategy before the sentence is made public.

The Catala president, Quim Torra, started a round of talks with the forces in favor of an independence referendum few months ago in order to find some common ground on how to respond to a potential guilty verdict to the nine jailed leaders.

The politician said that the party’s goal is to ensure that the republican movement "gains more support," for which she also called on Catalans to participate in this year’s September 11 National Day celebrations en masse.

It will be the eighth protest of its kind held on consecutive National Days, with the preceding seven surpassing the million attendee mark.
