The Catalan government has approved €5.99 billion in additional funding to cover "urgent" expenses, mainly personnel costs.

The decision comes after the government withdrew its 2026 budget bill after agreeing with  Esquerra Republicana (ERC), a key parliamentary ally, to allow more time for negotiations, as it lacked the support needed to pass the plan.

The Catalan Finance Minister, Alicia Romero, said the funds will give "breathing space" to Catalonia while negotiations for the official budget are ongoing.

The approved funds will also help cover rising costs for the Catalan government, such as higher rental assistance, as well as ongoing expenses for long-term projects and programmes, including public transport subsidies.

Romero added that there are no plans to approve further funding, stating that the current measure was the most that could be done for the time being.
