Carme Forcadell has been granted permission by the authorities in Mas d'Enric prison to leave three days a week

She will be allowed to do charity work and to take care of a family member.

Forcadell, the former speaker of the Catalan parliament was sentenced to 11 years and six months imprisonment by Spain’s Supreme Court in October 2019.

She was one of nine politicians and activists convicted to between 9 and 13 years in jail for their role in the 2017 Catalan independence push.

Wednesday’s decision came one day after jailed activist Jordi Cuixart was granted 72-hour leave, despite opposition from the prosecutor. Fellow imprisoned activist Jordi Sànchez was also given permission to leave prison a few days each week.

In January last year Forcadell told Catalan News about her aspiration to "empower" and help change the lives of her fellow female inmates.
