Seró’s Dolmen, a unique prehistoric monument in Catalonia and the Iberian Peninsula

The ‘Dolmen de Seró’ is a megalith funeral monument dating back to the year 2,800 BC. This megalith tomb is considered a unique piece due to its composition of sedimentary rock and its anthropomorphic motifs. These features make the ‘Dolmen de Seró’ comparable to other European prehistoric monuments. It was discovered accidentally in 2007 during construction work in the western Catalan County of Noguera, near the city of Lleida. Now, the area is being adapted to enable visits.

Artesa de Segre (ACN).– The ‘Dolmen de Seró’ megalith was discovered accidentally back in 2007, during construction work on the Segarra-Garrigues canal, in western Catalonia. Seró’s Dolmen is a prehistoric funeral monument dating back to 2,800 BC, and is composed of massive calcarenite – a sort of sedimentary rock – profusely decorated with anthropomorphic motifs, a feature that makes this monument a unique piece in Catalonia and in the entire Iberian Peninsula, and is comparable to other similar European monuments. Now, the area is being adapted to enable visits.

Studies made from the megalith discovery show that the Dolmen de Seró was part of a monumental set of sculptures. Last January, the Town Halls of Balaguer and Artesa de Segre, both located near Lleida, decided to join forces on the management of the Interpretation Centre of the ‘Dolmen de Seró’, which will start next summer.

The deal involves making a space available at the Noguera Museum in Balaguer for the monument’s conservation and promotion. This museum is focused on the interpretation and diffusion of the region’s Islamic heritage, but its research lines also cover other cultural issues from Prehistory to the present.

Another objective of the agreement is to create tourist routes linking different key attraction points in the Noguera County. The intention is not to limit these tours just to patrimonial elements, but to also include gastronomy, wine tours and a guide to the landscape of the area.
