Catalan museums received a total of 25.8 million visits in 2018, some 7.3% more than the 24 million visits registered the previous year.

With the recent opening of a contemporary textile art museum in Sant Cugat, Catalonia now has 114 museums, nine of which are designated as being of national interest.

Including all of their various facilities and collections, there are currently a total of 626 museum venues in Catalonia.

Ahead of International Museum Day on Saturday, culture minister Mariàngela Vilallonga also reported that acquisitions by museums went up last year by 25%.

Also on the rise is participation in cultural and educational activities organized by museums, which attracted some 2.8 million visits in 2018.
