Catalan director J.A. Bayona's 'Society of the Snow' has been watched almost 100 million times on streaming platform Netflix within three months since the movie's release.

According to official streaming numbers, as of March 31 the movie has reached 98.1 million viewers and a total of 238.6 million viewing hours.

The movie is now the second most watched non-English movie within the first three months since its release on Netflix. The Norwegian 'Trolls' gathered 103 million viewers within the first 91 days.

Chances are very low that 'Society of the Snow' will surpass 'Troll' before its first 91 days are over. But it has surpassed Spanish movies 'Nowhere' and 'The Platform'.

'Society of the Snow' was also watched by more than half a million viewers in Spanish movie theatres.

The movie was also nominated for two Oscars, Best Makeup and Hairstyling and Best International Feature, losing out on both.

Miracle of the Andes

'Society of the Snow' tells the story of what has been referred to as the 'Miracle of the Andes,' where over a dozen passengers of the Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 survived for 72 days in the Valle de las Lágrimas valley between Chile and Argentina in 1972.

16 out of the 45 passengers on the plane made it back home.

"We cannot talk about life leaving aside the darkest moments. There cannot be light if there are no shadows. I believe this is what makes this story most interesting, as it is possible to talk about light and darkness at the same time," Bayona said about his film back in September
