Mummies, comics, 19th-century portraits: CaixaForum exhibits for 2022-2023

30 shows and 4,000 activities planned by the Caixa Foundation for next season in Barcelona and other parts of Catalonia

The CaixaForum and the CosmoCaixa Science Museum presented on Wednesday the program for their 2022-23 exhibit season, which includes archaeology, art, science, photography, and design exhibitions. 

The season’s highlights include a journey across the history of experimental photography, and a close look at six ancient Egyptian mummies which traveled from the British Museum in London to the Caixa gallery in Barcelona.

The exhibit called “Pharaon King of Egypt” also includes a collection of objects from the Nile Valley and it will be available to the public from 29 March to 23 July, 2023.

The season also invites the visitor to enter the private collections of great artists from Caixa' Contemporary Art Collection. 'Gods, magicians and sages' at Barcelona’s gallery exhibit personal objects of Catalan artists such as Joan Miró, Rosa Amorós, Miquel Barceló and some internationals such as Georg Baselitz and Hiroshi Sugimoto.

Another ‘must-see’ at the CaixaForum Barcelona is 'The century of the portrait. The image of 19th century society' exhibition which includes paitings by Francisco de Goya, Vicente López, Federico de Madrazo, Eduardo Rosales, Ignacio Pinazo, Joaquim Sorolla and Ignacio Zuloaga. 

With the exhibition 'Comic. Dreams and history' CaixaForum Barcelona is also showcasing masterpieces of comics history by famed illustrators such as Hergé known for creating the adventures of Tintin. 

Another popular exhibition staying for this season is 'Cinema and Fashion, curated by famed french designer Jean Paul Gaultier. 

This season’s slogan is 'We believe in culture. Let's grow in culture'. Overall, Caixa Forum has planned around 30 art shows and 4,000 activities, including eight other exhibits that will travel to more than 80 cities in Spain and Portugal.

CaixaForum in Barcelona is located in the restored old clothing factory ‘Casa Casarramona’, at the foot of Montjuïc mountain.  

The exhibitions “Pharaoh King of Egypt” and “Pixar. Building characters” will also travel to Lleida Caixa site, while the Caixa galleries in Tarragona and Girona will be hosting other exhibitions such as “Talking Brains” and “Posters of modern art. The origins of marketing”.  

CosmoCaixa

The new season exhibit of Cosmo Caixa, Barcelona’s Science Museum, will approach the memorable characters designed by Pixar. The exhibition is curated by the Boston Museum of Science in collaboration with Pixar Animation Studios.

“The setting is very interactive, allowing visitors to animate the classic Pixar figures and work on the creation of 3D virtual worlds,” explained Ignasi Miró, Director of the Foundation's Culture and Science Area. 

Pixar is an American computer animation studio founded in 1974 and known for its commercially successful computer-animated feature films such as Toy Story,  Finding Nemo, and Incredibles. The company has earned 23 Academy Awards, 10 Golden Globe Awards, and 11 Grammy Awards.   

CaixaForum+

The season will be marked by the fusion of technology and culture with the arrival of a new digital platform, and an interactive guide of the Universe Room at the CosmoCaixa Science Museum and the Forest Vertical of CaixaForum Barcelona. 

The director of the "la Caixa" Foundation, Elisa Durán, stated that the initiative aims to complement the centers’ offers and reach new audiences who do not have access to a center like CaixaForum or CosmoCaixa.
