Unemployment down by 22,090 people in one month, as June records the largest annual fall in 16 years

At the end of June 2014, the unemployment lists in Catalonia registered 570,214 people, 22,090 fewer than in May, and 47,074 fewer than in June of last year, according to the Spanish Ministry of Employment and Social Security. These figures represent a decrease of 3.73% in the number of unemployed between May and June, and even more significantly, a decrease of 7.63% between June 2013 and June 2014. This reduction of 47,074 persons in annual terms constitutes the greatest fall in unemployment registered in Catalonia since 1998, 16 years ago. Catalonia has experienced the largest decreases in the numbers of people unemployed of any autonomous community in Spain.

Madrid (ACN.) - At the end of June 2014, the unemployment lists registered 570,214 people, 22,090 fewer than in May, and 47,074 fewer than in June of last year, according to the Spanish Ministry of Employment and Social Security. These figures represent a decrease of 3.73% in the number of unemployed between May and June, and even more significantly, a decrease of 7.63% between June 2013 and June 2014. This reduction of 47,074 persons in annual terms constitutes the greatest fall in unemployment registered in Catalonia since 1998, 16 years ago. Catalonia has experienced the largest decreases in the numbers of people unemployed of any autonomous community in Spain.  


Catalonia has accumulated a full twelve consecutive months of falling unemployment levels, consolidating a downward trend in unemployment in the region. In addition, the decrease registered this year in June represents the largest decrease recorded by the Ministry of Employment since 1998, when employment fell by 52,900 people. In percentage terms, the decline in annual terms of 7.63% recorded in June 2014 is the most significant decrease registered for this month since June 2000, when the percentage fall was 9.25%.

However, in inter-monthly terms, June 2014 did not fare better than June 2013, when employment fell by 24,878 people compared with May. The monthly decrease between May and June of 2013 represented the greatest one-month decline recorded by the Ministry of Employment since 1996, and June 2014 was not able to out-do that figure.   

Unemployment levels in December 2010

As the total number of people unemployed stands at 570,214 at the end of June 2014, to find a similar number of people unemployed it is necessary to go back to December 2010, when the lists of the Employment Service of Catalonia (SOC) registered 562,373 people unemployed.

These latest figures continue the promising trend of falling unemployment in Catalonia. In May this year, registered unemployment in Catalonia dropped to 592,304 people, the first time the figure fell below the 600,000 mark since August 2011.
