Catalonia broke a three-month price downtrend, slightly rising to 2% in June from 1.8% in May, as Spain's National Statistics Institute reported on Tuesday morning.

Across Spain, the Consumer Price Index (CPI or IPC for its acronym in Spanish) stood at 2.3%, 0.1 percentage point higher than first estimated by the end of the month and 0.3 percentage points higher than in May.

Experts believe fuel costs are behind this increase, as prices dropped during June 2024. Housing, which grew by 4.2%, and food and non-alcoholic beverages, with 2.8%, are also behind the higher prices.

May's IPC in Catalonia was the lowest figure since September 2024.

Both Catalonia and Spain have seen prices rise and break the downtrend that has been in place since February, when they peaked at their annual maximum of 3.1%.

According to the European Central Bank's plans, Catalonia is still inside the inflation objective of 2%, while Spain slightly surpasses it.

All Catalan areas have seen a slight increase of between 0.1 and 0.3 percentage points. Barcelona's IPC in June stood at 2% from 1.8%, while Girona rose to 2.2% from 2%. Meanwhile, Lleida's 2.1% is 0.1 percentage points higher than in May.

Tarragona registered the highest increase with 0.3 percentage points, reaching an inflation of 2.1%.
