The health center predicts treating up to 80 patients in 2018 with this new robotic surgery
The North American multinational Amazon has announced the hiring of 800 workers in order to incorporate their Amazon Robotics cutting edge technology at the logistic centers of Castellbisbal and Prat de Llobregat, just outside Barcelona. These 800 jobs are in addition to the 1,500 hirings that they had already announced would take place over the next three years. 200 of these new positions will be in Castellbisbal, where the new technology is already in use, and the other 600 will start at the new logistics center in Prat, which is opening in October, 2017. In addition, Amazon is contracting highly qualified engineers for the maintenance of the whole system at the two centers.
Germans Trias i Pujol Hospital, in Badalona, has operated a larynx cancer using Da Vinci robot. This pioneering technology, which was never been used in the Spanish State before, allows to extract the whole larynx through the mouth, without incisions. According to the hospital, this robotic surgery “is less aggressive for the patient and it guarantees a higher security and a quicker recovery”. Morever, the levels of blood waste and the recovery period are significantly reduced, as well as the possibilities of suffering from complications derivated from the operation. This intervention is part of a specific program of head and throat’s robotic surgery promoted by Germans Trias i Pujol.
Marcel·lí Antúnez Roca, one of the founders of the Catalan theatrical group ‘La Fura dels Baus’ has presented an exhibition in Arts Santa Mònica, a cultural centre run by the Catalan Government in Barcelona's famous Les Rambles. The display showcases the artist’s unusual dramatic method, which he names ‘Sistematúrgia’. This concept conceives theatre as a combination of robotics, corporal interfaces and audiovisuals systems. Apart from the exhibition, which will be open to the public until April 4th, this initiative also includes live performances by Antúnez once a week. ‘La Fura dels Baus’ produced the opening ceremony of the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games.
The People's Republic of China is this year’s special guest at the 30th edition of the Barcelona International Comic Fair, which runs from May 3rd to 6th at the Fira de Barcelona. An exhibition will showcase the most important works in the history of Chinese comics. Furthermore, this edition is turning the spotlight on robots, dedicating its main exhibition both to entertaining and exploring the relationship between robots and comics, cinema and literature.
The 44th edition of the Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia begins with the presentation of ‘Eva’, a Catalan movie about robots and artificial intelligence. It stars German-Catalan actor Daniel Brühl (‘Inglorious Basterds’, ‘Good bye Lenin’, or ‘The Edukators’) and ACN talked to him. It is the first time a Catalan movie opens this international festival that will run from October 6th until October 16th.
A student group at the University of Girona has placed first in a European wide competition of robotic submarines. The robotic submarine they built has various capacities, including being able to pass through doors and follow walls.
