Renfe train drivers are striking this Thursday morning following Wednesday's fatal accident in Toledo, south of Madrid.

So far, no significant incidents have been reported during the strike, with  minimum service levels for peak hours set at 66% on the Rodalies commuter rail network and 73% on the high-speed service.

Renfe sources confirmed that the first scheduled trains departed on both the Rodalies and high-speed networks.

Outside of peak hours, minimum service levels will be 33%, increasing again to two out of every three trains between 5-8.30pm.

The union Semaf called the strike to demand safety improvements after at least 68 people lost their lives in a train crash on Wednesday near the town of Urda, outside Toledo.

Catalonia's Civil Protection committee is scheduled to meet Thursday morning to closely monitor mobility and any incidents that may arise.

The director of Rodalies de Catalunya, Òscar Playà, admitted that Thursday will be "a complicated day," advising the public to avoid using the commuter rail network and to check for information before setting out to properly "plan" their journeys.

In Lleida, early this morning, one of the two high-speed rail services had to be replaced by a bus because no train driver was available.

In Tarragona, scheduled high-speed trains departed from the high-speed station, while on the Barcelona commuter network, passengers experienced some delays.

The train drivers' union Semaf demand "structural" changes regarding safety, and expressed its condolences to the victims. They also urge caution in attributing causes to the accident until all the details are known.
