Ready-to-serve Spanish omelets from the Grup Palacios food company have been recalled from supermarkets due to an alert for botulism, a fatal illness.

The disease begins with weakness, blurred vision, tiredness, and trouble speaking.

The company announced that customers should not consume such products and instead return them to the establishments where they were bought. The company has also decided to halt production in the central Spanish city of Segovia as a "precaution."

These omelets have been sold in Palacios' supermarkets as well as Chef Select, Auchan, Eroski, Unide, Consum, DIA, Ametller Origen, Condis, El Corte Inglés, Carrefour, Alipende, Grupo IFA, and Rikissimo. Some of these stores are located in Catalonia.

Palacios also quoted the Spanish Food and Nutrition safety agency, which said that "there was no evidence found linking the products or the manufacturing processes" with confirmed cases of botulism.

Ametller reassures customers

Catalan supermarket chain Ametller issued a statement in which it informed its customers that Palacios omelets, sold under the "Essentials" label, were no longer on sale in their physical or online stores.

The chain said it had not received any complaints from customers but that it would be following any potential incidents closely.

The store now only sells its own brand's omelets which are made in the town of Olèrdola, south of Barcelona.
