Second and third coronavirus fatalities in Catalonia

23 new cases have been confirmed, including two infants

Two people with coronavirus, a 97-year-old man and an 88-year-old woman have died, health authorities confirmed in a statement on Monday afternoon.

It brings the total number of fatalities in Catalonia to three, following the death of an 87-year-old woman on Friday

The 97-year-old man, who had an underlying condition, was admitted to hospital in Barcelona on Friday. He died on Sunday.

He was living in a nursing home in the Catalan capital; residents there with respiratory problem have been placed in isolation already, and authorities are investigating those with whom the victim was in contact.

The second victim announced on Monday was an 88-year-old woman who was suffering from pneumonia and respiratory failure. She began showing symptoms on February 27 and was admitted to a Barcelona hospital on Friday, March 6, where she died today.

23 new cases

The health authorities also confirmed that there are 23 new cases of SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus in Catalonia, including two infants, one aged six months and the other aged one year, both of whom have mild symptoms and are in isolation at home.

So far, 101 coronavirus cases have been declared in Catalonia, 25 of whom are healthcare professionals.
