A member of the Catalan police, the Mossos d'Esquadra, killed his former partner on Saturday before turning the gun on himself in Terrassa, in Barcelona's metro area.

"We are dismayed after the last sexist violence homicide case, which this time allegedly involves a member of our corps that has latter killed himself. We regret it deeply," the Mossos d'Esquadra tweeted.

"The investigation is still open. We'll continue to work every day to eradicate violence against women," the police added.

The officer used his service weapon in the crime, sources from the police confirmed to the news agency ACN.

There weren't previous gender violence complaints from the victim, according to Catalonia's High Court.
