One person died and six people were injured in a chemical industry explosion in Barcelona this afternoon.

The blast occurred at the Montsolís de la Verneda industrial estate on Via Trajana in the Sant Martí district in the north of the city.

Emergency services are treating six people for injuries of varying degrees of severity.

The fire service is also attending the scene, and the Catalan Civil Protection Agency has enacted the 'Plaseqcat' emergency response plan.

In February, three people died as a result of an explosion and fire at a chemical plant in Tarragona in the south of Catalonia.
