Man jailed in connection with murder of ex-girlfriend in Barcelona

15 women were killed by their partners in Catalonia in 2023, 128 since 2012

A 31-year-old man accused of murdering his ex-girlfriend has been provisionally jailed. 

The suspect was arrested on January 5 and on Monday he appeared in court.    

The killing took place on December 29, the same day police found the lifeless body of a 38-year-old woman in an apartment in the San Martí district of Barcelona.  

The suspected perpetrator was arrested after a police investigation identified and located him. 

The Catalan Ministry for Equality and Feminism condemned the murder and offered its condolences to the victim's relatives and neighbors. 

The ministry added that eradicating gender-based violence is a top priority in Catalonia. With the murder of the 38-year-old woman, a total of fifteen women were killed by their partners or ex-partners in Catalonia in 2023, and a total of 128 women have been killed since 2012.
