Heavy rain in Girona counties with around 100 mm both Saturday and Sunday

The first heatwave of the summer in Catalonia is already part of the past, as the weather changed this weekend and some heavy rain fell especially in the northeast of the country, in the Girona counties.

Indeed, Anglès, in la Selva county, registered 123 mm of rainfall only on Saturday, the maximum figure in Catalonia – 45.8 of them fell in 30 minutes, something that surpasses the intensity risk threshold. The same happened in Artés (Bages), where 41.9 mm fell in half an hour, that is, especially heavy rain. In Ulldeter, high up in the Girona Pyrenees, 70 mm fell during the day, and in Banyoles, 44.6 mm, a similar amount as in Navata (32.7 mm).

On Sunday, showers returned to the same areas, with 87 mm in Quart, 86 mm in Girona, 72 mm in Celrà or 64 mm in Bescanó. The intensity risk threshold was surpassed in Cassà de la Selva, with 44.7 mm in 30 minutes.

Due to the rain, but mainly after the strong winds, the firefighters received over 100 warnings on Saturday, to handle trees, façades or cables that were harmed because of the weather conditions. Girona and Cassà de la Selva were the municipalities with more incidents registered, not only by the firefighters, but also by the 112 emergency phone number, with received almost 200 calls by 5 pm on Sunday in total.
