Healthcare professionals have observed two minutes of silence in memory of colleagues who have died in the face of the covid-19 pandemic,

On Thursday at noon, doctors and nurses paid tribute from their workplaces of hospitals, public health centers, and other centers.

The initiative was a joint call from the professional associations related to the field of health. Nine doctors who were active have lost their lives due to the coronavirus, according to the Barcelona Medical Association (COMB).

Eight worked in the province of Barcelona and one in Lleida. "It's fair to have an emotional and intimate memorial for all of them," said the president of the COMB, Dr. Jaume Padrós.

There are no official data at the moment on how many health professionals who were active have died of Covid-19 in Catalonia, but there have been 9,933 infected with the virus according to the department of health on Tuesday.

According to data from the Spanish ministry of health on Thursday, 50,088 doctors and nurses have contracted Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic across all of Spain.

“You must have been on the front or second line to understand the uncertainty, especially in the peak moments of the pandemic, due to the difficult management of resources and lack of personal protective equipment,” Dr. Padrós explains to the Catalan News Agency.

"Any death is too many in a situation like this. There have been too many professionals affected and they have not stopped” attending to the sick, he continues. “Their commitment has been total."

"I think there is no profession that can give more than health professionals have given to society in recent months."
