Girona Immigration Office streamlines TIE process
Foreigner ID card appointments will now be automatically assigned within two weeks of residence permit approval

The immigration office in Girona, in collaboration with Spain's National Police, has launched a new automated appointment system to streamline the issuing of TIE foreigner identity cards and address the backlog and delays the service has been experiencing.
From now on, once a residence permit is approved – whether processed directly by the immigration office or via the Spanish interior ministry – a pre-assigned appointment will automatically be sent to the applicant, allowing them to process their TIE within two weeks.
However, this will not apply to permits that are "conditional on other prior procedures" such as registering with Social Security or entering Spanish territory.
Appointment notifications will be sent via SMS or email to the phone number or email address provided by the applicant.
If no message is received within 15 days, or if the person cannot attend the assigned appointment, they must manually request one via the official appointments portal.
A statement from the Spanish government office in Girona said the initiative "is part of a broader strategy to improve administrative efficiency and optimize public resources, simplifying the process for foreign nationals."
The new system eliminates intermediate steps and reduces waiting times for obtaining documentation. "The goal is to ensure better use of available appointments and provide faster, more direct service to the public," the statement reads.
