Flood alert issued in southern Ebre delta region for weekend

Heavy rain began on Saturday morning in the Ebre river delta region, in southern Catalonia, as showers are expected in the area throughout the weekend.

Civil Protection authorities have issued a flood alert for Saturday and Sunday in the counties near the delta, since downpour is expected to last until Sunday early morning. In some cases, torrential rain is feared, and the public is warned not to approach ravines, streams, or rivers, in case they burst their banks.

Between Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning, Baix Ebre and Montsià counties are expected to get 40 mm in 30 minutes at some point, and the same areas may experience downpours of over 100 mm in 24 hours.

The rain will ease during Sunday morning, as weaker showers will move to the southern and central coast.
