The derailment of a train in Vilanova i la Geltrú, a seaside town south of Barcelona, caused delays in the Rodalies R2 South commuter rail line on Friday morning.

The incident occurred when the train was heading to Renfe's maintenance workshop in Vilanova i la Geltrú, and according to Spain's train manager Renfe, the train did not have any passengers when it derailed.

The derailment coincides with America's Cup's first preliminary regatta in the coastal city, which got underway on Thursday and will last until Sunday.

Commuters and politicians complained of the frequent breakdowns and delays on the network and asked for more investment in public transport.

The president of the Garraf county government. Mònica Gallardo, said that the territory lives in a "terrible situation" because of the "bad quality and the large number of accidents."
