The Catalan Media Corporation signed an agreement with the Democratic Memorial Institution to compile this audiovisual content.

Since its beginnings, Catalan public television and radio have made a strong commitment to creating an oral memory databank, which will now be made public.

The incorporation of this archive will make it the biggest databank ever of this type in Europe. At the signing of the agreement, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Raül Romeva, said that this joint effort will allow for ”sharing historical memory with one click.”

  • “Historical memory is the only way to avoid repeating these events”

The agreement celebrates the effort of the public media stations to store and digitalize more than a thousand oral statements. According to the presenters of the initiative, the Democratic Memorial Institution is the ideal platform to make all this material available and to provide information to citizens and, in particular, researchers and students. Romeva also explained the three main objectives of this agreement. One is the “symbolic reparation” for victims of the war and the dictatorship, as well as sharing these experiences with newer generations. “Historical memory is the only way to avoid repeating these events,” Romeva added. The third goal is to recognize the importance of the effort made by the thousands of anonymous people who have contributed to the historical collection for years. The Democratic Memorial is a public institution created in 2007, and the first of its kind in Spain. Its mission is to foster historical memory in Catalonia, particularly about the Second Republic, the Spanish Civil War, the Franco regime and the transition to democracy.
