About 60 residents were evacuated from their homes in Santa Coloma de Gramenet, just outside Barcelona, on Monday after cracks were discovered in the internal structure of the buildings, according to El Periódico newspaper.

The affected buildings are located at 9 and 11 Pirineus Street, in the Santa Rosa and Raval neighborhoods of the city.

Of the 60 people affected, 51 have informed the city council that they don't have an alternative place to stay with friends or family and need alternative housing. 13 of them are children.

In 2016, the city council launched a project to rehabilitate the apartment blocks in the area where the evacuation took place. Many of the houses were in poor condition, having been built in the 1970s.

The news follows an incident three weeks ago in which three people lost their lives in a building collapse in Badalona. Three adjacent buildings were evacuated as a safety precaution.
