Europeans are heading to the polls to decide on a new European parliament on Sunday June 9. But not everyone living in Spain is allowed to vote.

Everyone who has the Spanish nationality and is 18 years old on election day, even those celebrating their 18th birthday on June 9, can cast their vote in Spain.

In Spain voting for any election isn't obligatory, meaning those who don't want to vote, don't have to.

People with the Spanish nationality living in a European country where voting is obligated, for example in Belgium, can also choose to not vote

Registration to vote

If a Spanish citizen residing abroad wants to vote, they need to be registered at the consular register at the Spanish Embassy for the Census of Resident-Absent Voters Living Abroad.

In countries where voting is allowed from 16 years old, such as Germany and Belgium, EU-citizens who are registered to vote in those countries can also participate in the elections, even if their own country doesn't allow voting at that age.

EU-citizens living permanently in Spain had to express their want to vote in the European elections before January 30 of 2024, unless they had already done that for the previous European elections. Once registered its permanent unless the citizen officially revokes their decision.

Where to vote

In Spain those wanting to vote can cast their ballot on June 9 in the polling station near their place of registration.

Spanish citizens residing in a different country can vote at the designated Spanish consulates or embassies between 3-8 days before the election day on June 9.

If they live in Europe, they can vote in places used for the purpose of voting for the European elections.

EU citizens residing in Spain can vote by post, on request, or in person at the polling station in accordance with their electoral roll, based on their place of registration.
