The Spanish government is reacting promptly to the tense session in the Catalan Parliament. The Spanish executive will challenge the referendum law in the Constitutional Court as soon as the chamber in Barcelona approves it, presumably on Wednesday evening, as vice president Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría announced on Wednesday afternoon. She also warned that passing the bill will have “serious consequences”.

Indeed, Sáenz de Santamaría said that the people responsible for this Wednesday’s events in the Catalan parliament might face criminal charges. She revealed that the Spanish government has already challenged bringing the referendum law to the floor in the Constitutional Court. However, the Court does not meet again until tomorrow.
