Carles Puigdemont’s lawyers will ask on Tuesday the German court in charge of his case to reject his extradition to Spain, Catalan News learned. This way the Catalan leader’s defense will meet the deadline to respond to the German prosecution’s request to extradite him for rebellion and misuse of funds, made to the same court on June 1. Sources close to Puigdemont’s defense said the court has no deadline to take its decision, but one is expected no later than mid-July.

The former Catalan president was arrested in Germany on March 25 and spent twelve days in precautionary detention. He was released on April 6 with precautionary measures, such as not being able to leave Germany. Puigdemont settled in Berlin but in mid-June he moved to Hamburg for “security reasons.” The northern German city is closer to Schleswig, the city hosting the court in charge of his extradition case.
