Leaders around the world condemn the attack in Barcelona

Mayors of other cities affected by terrorism, institutions and political leaders have expressed their support

There have been numerous support declarations from around the world. The United States have condemned the attack and offered “all their support” to help while reminding that they will put all their efford to capture the terrorists. The President of the United States, Donald Trump, published a tweet stating “The United States condemns the terror attack in Barcelona, Spain, and will do whatever is necessary to help. Be tough & strong, we love you!”

Also the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, has also condemned the attack. “Our hearts, sympathies and our support is with the victims and their families (...) even though we cannot ignore the anger we have to stand together to protect the freedom of our society and promote the unity, openness and integration,” he said.

The European Commission President, Jean-Claude Juncker, condemned the “cowardly”attack and asked for a Europe-wide response. The Commission president also highlighted the heroic behavior of other pedestrians who ran to help the wounded putting themselves in danger.

Also the European Council president Donald Tusk criticized the “cowardly attack on innocents”.

The Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, said on Twitter that Paris and Barcelona "are cities of exchange, Love and tolerance” highlighting that "these values are more important than terrorism". The Eiffel Tower had turned off the lights at 00:45 this morning in remembrance of the victimes of the terrorist attack.

Also the mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has condemned the attack on twitter “My thoughts are with the victims of this barbaric terrorist attack in the great city of Barcelona and with their brave emergency services.” The mayor of Nizza, Christian Estrosi, expressed his support with the city of Barcelona and the Spanish people.

Numerous governments around the world have expressed support and condemned the attack. The Prime Minister of Great Britain, Teresa May, has said in a press release that her country gives full support to Spain in the fight against terrorism. Also the German Chancellor has expressed her support through a tweet on the profile of her spokesperson, Steffen Seifert, who said “We share the deep grief of the victims of the disgusting attacks in Barcelona – we are standing by the Spanish people with solidarity and friendship”. Germany declared a day or mourning in the honor of the victims of the attack in Barcelona.

There have been also messages of support and condemnation of the attack from the leaders in Italy, Turkey, Japan, France and the Vatican. Pope Francesc said he would pray for the victims and was with his thoughts with the Spanish People and the victims’ families.

Also ex-president of the United States, Barack and Michelle Obama have expressed their support in a personal tweet.
