Pro-independence organizations have called a general strike on Tuesday 3 October, in response to Sunday’s events, as protesters also took to the streets again to stand up against what many see as an affront on democracy.

Unprecedented police violence throughout the day leaving more than 700 people injured has enraged many citizens across Catalonia, and abroad, as what was intended to be a peaceful referendum descended into chaos, prompting more calls for a general strike from groups such as left wing party CUP, as well as trade union CGT.

Meanwhile, Plaza Catalunya in the city centre is already filling up with protesters while the votes are being counted, awaiting the results.

For pro-independence organizations and many citizens across Catalonia, the struggle for the creation of an independent Catalan state is far from finished.
