The mayor of Barcelona, Jaume Collboni, who was appointed mayor in June after a last-minute plot twist, told Catalan media on Monday, that he plans to expand the city council and create the role of a night mayor.

The main function of the night mayor, he explained, will be to coordinate nighttime activities in the city, particularly in the areas of culture and nightlife, which could provide more cultural activities for young people.

Collboni argued that cities like New York, Paris, and London also have a night mayor.

Expanding the city council is a top priority for the mayor to pass the 2024 budget after failing to do so in December 2023.

Whether a governing deal will be struck with the progressive Comúns or the pro-independence TriasXBCN is still unclear as Collboni has avoided naming any names, although he is open to offering the role of night mayor to the party he will govern with, and that it would be “part of the deal.”

However, he assured that the new council and its policies “will be progressive.”

Other priorities for the mayor of Barcelona also include improving security in the Catalan capital, while the plan to expand the city’s tram line will be put on hold "for now.”
