As PortAventura World prepares for the summer season, Catalonia's largest theme park, south of Barcelona, will open its sixth hotel on Saturday, called Colorado Creek.

The 150-room, four-star hotel based on a Wild West theme has cost some 25 million euros, employing 150 people and raising the number of rooms available at the park to 2,000.

Guests at Colorado Creek will also get unlimited access to the park, a free day at the Ferrari Land amusement park, and be able to use the Gold River hotel's swimming pools.

Commitment to zero emissions

One innovative feature of the new hotel is that it is environmentally sustainable, producing zero emissions, something the owners wish to extend to the resort's other hotels.

PortAventura World says that last year 35% of visitors to the park stayed in one of its hotels, a rising trend that means the company is looking into building more hotels in the future.

Families are the main guests at the resort's hotels, with an increasing number from within Spain, with foreign visitors mainly coming from France, the UK and Russia.

The firm also says growing demand means it plans to expand its convention center. Since 2009, the center has hosted over 2,000 events, some 70% of which were international.
