Barcelona's Palau de la Música Catalana concert hall and the Recinte Modernista de Sant Pau hospital-museum will be joining forces by selling combined tickets at a reduced price of €19 in celebration of the 25th anniversary of their declaration as World Heritage sites by UNESCO.

Both buildings were designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner who highly influenced Catalan modernism. To celebrate the centenary of the architect’s death, the reduced prices are valid from December 1 until January 6, after which the tickets return to the original price of €24.

Celebratory events

To celebrate the anniversary, the Recinte Modernista de Sant Pau will host a photography exhibition from December 1 until March 26 of next year, showing the hospital’s first restoration and recovery work.

The exhibition highlights the hospital’s unique settings since the late 1970’s, as the renovation efforts led to its declaration as a UNESCO World Heritage site, making it the world’s only active hospital to receive this title.

The Palau de la Música will host concert on December 21 in which the Orchestre des Champs Élysées and the Collegium Vocale Gent will be performing Beethoven's Missa Solemnis directed by Philippe Herreweghe.

The piece was first performed in the concert hall by the Orfeó Català choir in 1927, of which the first recording is preserved worldwide.

Domènech i Montaner year

The collaboration continues in 2023, the year in which Domènech i Montaner is remembered during a series of multidisciplinary activities and initiatives hosted at both venues.

The concert hall’s program ranges from architectural conferences and informative sessions accompanied by music, to virtual architectural visits and an exhibition on the building’s origin.

On the hospital’s end, a book has been published about the construction of the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau, visualizing the process with more than 2,000 maps, documents and drawings.

Inside the Recinte Modernista, high-quality reproductions of the architectural plans will be displayed as part of a permanent collection, showing different construction phases.

In addition, the museum plans more temporary exhibitions on the historical mosaics of the Administration Pavilion and on hospital architecture that Domènech i Montaner inspired.

Other programmed activities include concerts, workshops, a poetry reading and lecture series, held in collaboration with the Domènech i Montaner Foundation.

The Palau de la Música Catalana is a unique modernist gem right in the heart of Barcelona’s old town.

Its grandiose is immediately evident when you stumble upon it in the narrow streets of the neighborhood of Born, with its enormous pillars at the front doors decorated with colorful mosaics, the sculptures of flowers, shields, and emblems along its walls, and the intricate designs on the higher floors of the building that are difficult to see from the street, given the proximity of other buildings that surround it.
