Catalan actress Laia Costa has taken the award for Best Actress at the Málaga Film Festival – an award she will share alongside her co-star Susi Sánchez.

Costa played the role of Amaia in ‘Cinco Lobitos,’ a new mother taking on fresh challenges of motherhood, relationships with parents and family, and learning new emotional dynamics, a role she played alongside Sánchez, who acted as Begoña, the mother of Amaia.

The intimate work swept up the honors on Spain’s southern coast, picking up the Biznaga d'Or for best Spanish film, Best Screenplay, as well as the individual prizes for its two main protagonists.

In parallel, the Catalan production 'Mi vacío y yo', by Adrián Silvestre and co-written by Carlos Marqués-Marcet, received the Special Jury Prize.

The Biznaga d'Or for best Ibero-American film was given to 'Utama', by Bolivian filmmaker Alejandro Loayza.

Catalan cinema has had an excellent year so far in 2022, with director Carla Simón taking home the Golden Bear for best picture with 'Alcarràs' at the Berlinale Film Festival.

The movie was hugely celebrated by at home by the Catalan film industry as well as international press from all over the world.

'Alcarràs' tells the story of a family during their last fruit harvest on a farm before the owners install solar panels. It's set in the Alcarràs countryside, outside Lleida in the west of Catalonia.
