The Catalan government plans to allocate 1.7% of the total 2024 budget to the department of culture.

The increase for the culture ministry edged nearer to the 2% mark that was set as an objective for this legislature.

In 2021, culture received 1.1% of the total budgeted spending, and its share increased to 1.3% in 2022 and 1.5% in 2023.

The department led by Natàlia Garriga pointed out that the cultural sector "already notices" the increases of recent years, and hopes to reach 2% in 2025, just before the end of the legislature if the current government can approve the spending plan early in the year.

The ministry also added that the budget for culture had never been as high as in this legislature.

Officials say that new projects have been able to go ahead with this increased funding.

Likewise, the executive affirms that the sector is "happy" with this staggered growth.

In 2023, €476 million was destined for the culture department from the spending plan, around €100 million more than the 2022 accounts.
