Imprisonment of Kurdish and Catalan leaders 'similar,' says trial observer

The Kurdish lawyer Hadi Cin has said that the trial against Catalan independence leaders "is a political case," adding that Spain's Supreme Court "is not independent." A member of Avocats Européens Démocrates, he compared the pre-trial imprisonment of Catalan politicians and activists with that of Selahattin Demirtas, the head of the Kurdish HDP party, incarcerated in Turkey since November 6, 2016. He also regretted that the trial was taking place in a European country: "There are serious human rights violations [in the world]. Turkey is one of these countries. Our expectation from Europe to protect human rights is very high, but this case disappointed me." / ACN
